Bullets Over Broadway (Original Broadway Cast Recording)

Inspired by Woody Allen’s seven-Oscar-nominated 1994 hit, the stage musical Bullets Over Broadway managed six Tony Award nods itself in 2014. It’s also that rare musical that lacks an original score, relying instead on an eclectic slate of ‘20s pop songs (many obscure; a few downright loopy), handpicked by Allen and five-time Tony-winning director/choreographer Susan Stroman. The legendary filmmaker admits he initially had misgivings about reworking his film for the Great White Way. “But when [the producers] told me they wanted to use music from the ‘20s, it started to sound more appealing,” Allen says. “And when I met Susan and talked with her, it started to seem very appealing. She’s infectious.” Stroman (who received her 14th Tony nomination for the show’s choreography) notes: “Woody wanted to pepper it with a few well-known '20s songs, like ‘Let’s Misbehave.’ But then he also wanted to pick songs that people might not know, like "Tain’t a Fit Night Out for Man or Beast’ and ‘The Hot Dog Song.’”
