Haywire (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

With Haywire, David Holmes returns to the partnership with director Steven Soderbergh that started with Out of Sight and Ocean’s Eleven. The brassy title track sets the mood with a stylish, anxiety-building tension reminiscent of classic scores by Lalo Schifrin. The wintry “Upstate NYC” follows with haunting tones and stark soundscapes before “Barcelona” grooves on Latin-tinged percussion and an infectious bass strut. At four minutes and 13 seconds, “Let’s Get Jiang” muses on '60s spy-movie soundtracks, with timeless timbres bobbing and weaving under hushed sitar drones, Indian harmonium, and tablas. “Against All Odds” eschews such psychedelic trappings for the kind of darting, jazz-tinged arrangements that are synonymous with ‘70s police dramas.
